I often get asked what families should wear on their family shoot. My number one tip? Wear something comfortable that makes you feel great. If you feel uncomfortable in yourself, it’ll show on the images and you won’t have the best time. You want to look like you!

On a recent family shoot in Fletcher Moss Park, in Didsbury, Manchester, the wonderful family rocked up all beautifully co-ordinated. I’m not talking wearing all matchy match clothes; just lovely complementary outfits. And look at the results…
You can see they are all wearing neutrals and different textures - and the effect is beautiful.
Guidance on what to wear on your family shoot.
Subject to the above rule that you should look like yours and feel comfortable, I usually suggest wearing neutrals / earthy tones. These work best for photos, especially with my style of photography and editing. There is no risk of bright yellow tops reflecting on your skin.
I’d steer clear of big logos and character items which really distract from the main subject of your family photos - you guys! And those thin stripes which make your eyes go funny - they’ll also look funny on images.
Be yourselves on your family shoot.
Opting for the neutrals and earthy tones in different textures keeps your family at the focal point of the images and elevates the aesthetic of the collection.
Please never feel like you must curate a beautiful set of outfits for your family shoot - please feel free to come as you are in what you’re happiest in! These pointers are very much just here if you love the look of these images and want a similar aesthetic for your family shoot!
