Reasons to be happy summer is over…

I know the title is controversial to many. I feel like I hear so many people talk about how upset they are that the summer is over - how they’re bothered by the dark evenings starting sooner and sooner, the air getting cooler and the hazy beer garden days becoming a distant memory.

But I am never happier and more content than I am in autumn. So I thought I’d share some of my autumnal joy with you in the hope it helps you summer-lovers move on from the warmer months and embrace the hyygelig seasons!

ONE

Life slows down a tad. I always end up burnt out in summer. Not because of the wedding season and early morning / late evening shoots - but because of the constant pressure to have a great summer! I figured out a few years ago that I was always getting ill over the summer months and it is precisely because of this - so many plans, so much pressure, so many holiday posts on IG giving you FOMO. It’s too much!

You turn the calendar to September, and it feels like there is a little more space to breathe.

TWO

TV. Now that the pressure of summer is over, you can relax, guilt-free in front of the TV to binge watch some of those series you’ve been meaning to start watching. It isn’t the same when it is daylight outside and you could be outside. Especially if you’re watching something dark/ spooky! Bring on the dark evenings.

THREE

Hot drinks. I, like most other 30 somethings, have a strong iced coffee obsession over the summer months, but there is nothing as comforting as a nice hot drink. Bring back hot coffee, all the basic b*tch PSLs and other seasonal warmers!

FOUR

It feels a little like a fresh start. September marks the start of a new academic year, and I still feel that sense of a mini new start in September - maybe that’s because I spent until the age of 26 (when I qualified as a solicitor) being dictated by a September to August year. It makes me want to buy a new notebook and a bouquet of sharpened pencils (Tom Hanks, You’ve Got Mail)!

FIVE

New knitwear! And just better fashion generally. Think Sally, from When Harry Met Sally!

SIX

Candles and all other hyggelig things. I’ve lit a festive candle every day this week and it has made me at least 50x happier than I was before. It makes me feel so cosy. Team that with a blanket, cup of tea, fairy lights and cuddles in front of the tv or solo reading a book - all the hygge!

SEVEN

The most beautiful nature scenes. There is nothing quite like wrapping up and going for a cosy fall walk - the beautiful autumn tones across the trees, and kicking your way thought the crisp leaves!

EIGHT

Halloween. I love making a bit of a fuss for Halloween - the run up with pumpkin patch visits and finding cute costumes for the wee one. Then every Halloween, Mark and I make pumpkin pie with our Halloween playlist on, make a themed drink and cosy up to watch an old school horror (because I am way too soft for something modern!).
